My photography project delves into the life of Sergey Kechimov, the last guardian of Lake Imlor, a sacred site for the Khanty people in Western Siberia. It highlights his struggle to preserve the lake and his community’s way of life from the devastation caused by nearby oil excavation, which threatens their reindeer herding, natural environment, and spiritual traditions. Through this work, I aim to capture the tensions between an ancient culture deeply tied to the land and the relentless push of industrial development. Through images of Kechimov, his reindeer, the land, and his struggle I document the ongoing conflict between traditional indigenous life and the forces of industrialization.
